Hemlow achieves measurable carbon reductions in building maintenance

Leading the way in sustainable building services, Hemlow reports significant progress in reducing its carbon footprint, setting a strong example for the facilities management industry.

As the industry faces increasing pressure to reduce carbon footprint, Hemlow is demonstrating how data-led strategies can deliver real change. The company has committed to halving its carbon emissions by 2030 and achieving net-zero by 2050.

Between 2022 and 2024, Hemlow reduced its carbon footprint by 8% from 1,498 to 1,384 tCO₂ through targeted improvements across fleet operations, energy use, waste, and procurement.

Fleet changes deliver scope 1 cuts

Changes in Hemlow’s fleet has resulted in a 50% reduction in emissions, decreasing from 183 to 92 tCO₂e. Engineers are now assigned to local sites, which reduces travel distances and enhances efficiency. The transition to electric vehicles is also underway, supporting wider industry efforts to lower carbon emissions from transportation.

Printing and waste reduced

Scope 3 emissions from printing have seen an 80% reduction, with figures dropping from 3.85 to 0.785 tCO₂e. Digital platforms and processes are prioritised whenever possible, and while the company remains flexible to clients’ format preferences, initiatives such as tree planting are used to offset any necessary printing.

Hemlow’s waste emissions decreased by 18%. The business has implemented improved recycling processes and developed updated internal policies on waste handling and paper consumption.

A key part of these reduced energy consumptions is through the centralisation of office spaces and minimising the energy needed to operate multiple sites. Hemlow’s electricity is sourced through Total Energies, with all supplies backed by Renewable Energy Guarantees of Origin (REGO), guaranteeing that the energy used is generated from renewable sources.
