We want to provide everyone with an opportunity

We developed The Hemlow Improver Programme over ten years ago, to offer anyone at any age or stage in their life and profession the opportunity to build and develop a career in the engineering sector.

Unlike other traditional entry routes, it is not essential for candidates to have previous industry experience or specific qualifications. Instead, candidates are recruited based on their attitude and approach to work. We look to identify people with drive, motivation and a passion to learn.

What’s involved?

Phase 1

Once accepted into the programme Improvers will undergo an in-depth one-week company orientation, be assigned a welfare manager who will remain with them throughout the duration of the programme and complete essential health and safety training prior to site deployment.

Phase 2

The next stage of the programme will see the Improver undergo on-site competency training, split into 6 x quarterly blocks (each lasting between 10 -12 weeks) where they will visit a list of agreed sites, to shadow and receive “on the job” training from experienced Hemlow engineers.

In addition to their on-site training, they will also be expected to complete academic qualifications in a number of different areas. This will include basic training in specific disciplines such as plumbing and electrics.

Phase 3

Each quarter the Improver will be given several field-based tasks to complete, which are signed off by their supervising mentor, Welfare Manager and Regional Manager, ensuring competency at each level. Each one will put the learning and knowledge gained from their classroom training to the test in a practical environment. Tasks will increase in difficulty and will require higher levels of expertise as the programme progresses.

And you're done!

Following the completion of all training and a final review, at the end of the programme, Improver’s will have successfully achieved the status of ‘Maintenance Engineer’. This means that they will take on their own ‘lone-work’, independent of the employees they were previously shadowing/assisting and have a greater level of responsibility.

Once your time in the Improver Programme is over your career journey with Hemlow is far from over. In fact it is just the beginning!

We’re big believers in nurturing talent and continuous improvement to encourage people to build long-term careers with us.

Every Team Hemlow employee is given access to the Hemlow Scholarship Scheme where there are many routes for progression provided (subject to business requirements at the time).

Plus, we will continue to provide you with any training and support you need to get to where you want to be! There’s no limit to how far you can go with Hemlow.
