Hemlow identifies potential in untapped talent pool with improver programme

Written by Nina Brown

The most important thing to us at Hemlow is our people. We put them at the heart of everything we do and are proud to have created a culture where people grow with us and stay with us.

Learning is at the heart of our approach and this is also true when looking at recruiting new people into the company. We look to recruit talent who will not only develop as individuals but also help develop our business.

Hemlow Improver Programme

By taking a non-traditional approach we looked to reach people beyond the boundaries, and by doing so found a larger pool of talent who have helped grow our company to where it is today. Focusing more on identifying, passion, mindset and motivation, the Hemlow Improver Programme was born.

The programme offers anyone at any age or stage in their life and profession the opportunity to build and develop a career in engineering. The programme guarantees an extensive training programme followed by the opportunity of a progressive career with us.

What attracted me to the Improver Programme, was learning on the tools, aswell as being able to enhance my career within M&E with support from experienced engineers.

During my path from Improver to Engineer, I completed the improver handbook, which involved getting stuck into the typical day-to-day tasks carried out by an M&E engineer, the tasks ranged from plumbing, electrical and mechanical, which have become valuable.

What’s involved?

Improvers undergo 12-18 months of extensive training, starting with a company induction, IT Training, Improver Booklet overview and company orientation, where they will spend time with all departments between our Head Office and Operations teams to help them learn the ins and outs of the business! This is where they will also be assigned and meet their Welfare Manager, who will stay with them for the duration of the process.

Then it’s time to head into the field, where they will shadow experienced engineers who will mentor and guide them through their different stages of training and hands-on experience enabling them to use their training in the field and complete the essential tasks that prove they are able to move onto the ‘Lone Worker’ status at the end of the programme.

Training completed, they will the enter the field solo with the tools and skills they need to build a long-term career.

Many of our valued senior engineers and staff joined Team Hemlow via the programme and we are proud to have witnessed their journey.
