Engineer Profile – Introducing Will

Written by Elizabeth Lyon
With our continued growth into the Midlands and North, we had a chat with Midlands Engineer Will, who tells us about his busy day-to-day life, as well as the advice he would give to anyone considering a career in engineering.

In a few sentences briefly describe your career roles to date

When I left school, I started working in the family business on alarm and electrical installations. After a few years I then became self employed working on electrical installations for a number of Academy Schools which were being constructed at the time. From working as a subcontractor, I started with Stroma Evolution, who are based from Elland. I worked there for six years completing mobile engineering works for commercial clients as well as completing my electrical qualifications with them.

What inspired you to pursue a career in engineering?

I started as my family were in the business but I then wanted a change and therefore moved into maintenance so I could do a wider range of tasks – which I really enjoy.
Will

What is your biggest achievement to date – personal or professional?

After working with my family and then being self employed, my biggest achievement was gaining my qualifications including City and Guilds 236 Level 1-3, 17th Edition, L8, etc.

What does a typical day look like for you?

Every day is different. In the morning I start with standard PPM tasks and my allocated sites and then in the afternoon I respond to any reactive jobs or quoted works. If there have been no calls I will complete additional maintenance tasks on my sites.

If you could switch jobs with someone for a day, who would it be?

Whoever makes the most money! I have five kids at home! Amelia, Nathan, Mason, Kaden and Kelsie

What do you like most about your job?

I really enjoy working at Hemlow. I am treated really well and it’s great to be given responsibility for my own sites. There is a strong support network with the management and other regional engineers.

What advice would you give to any new engineers joining Hemlow? Or anyone considering a career in engineering?

Give it a go and get stuck in! It is totally different form where I have worked previously. It is great to meet other members of the team, as well as build a strong relationship with your managers.

Finally tell us something that you enjoying doing outside of work in your spare time?

I enjoy going for walks with the kids and taking them to the park. Also eating out, whether at lunch times or in the evening. I also enjoy my football and am a strong United supporter.
